Stephen Slade is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Yale University, where he has long been a fixture of the academic and local New Haven community. A Yale College alumnus (B.A. in Music, Class of 1974), he later returned to earn both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science, focusing on cognitive models of decision-making. His research and teaching span artificial intelligence, programming, and digital ethics, and he is the author of three books on computer programming and AI.
Over several decades, Dr. Slade has served Yale in multiple capacities—as a lecturer, administrator, and assistant chair of the Computer Science Department—helping to recruit faculty, oversee major renovations at 51 Prospect Street, and lead the university’s early connection to the Internet. He has taught thousands of Yale students and contributed to shaping the department’s growth and technological infrastructure. His perspective is deeply informed by his experiences as an undergraduate during Yale’s early years of coeducation, as a spouse of a Class of 1976 alumna, and as the parent of three Yale graduates (Classes of 2010 and 2015).
Beyond Yale, Dr. Slade has held teaching appointments at the NYU Stern School of Business and designed advanced information systems for presidential campaigns, the White House, and Wall Street—where he was instrumental in bringing the White House online. His work bridges the humanities and sciences, and he has applied cognitive modeling, case-based reasoning, and artificial intelligence to investment technology and risk management.
